Behold, the KIA Sportage – the front- or all-wheel-drive crossover of the "K1" class. It's the fifth iteration of this model, and it made its grand debut on June 8, 2021.

For the first time in its 28-year history, KIA decided to split the European version from the "global" model. Cars come with different wheelbases (2755 mm versus 2680 mm) and lengths (4660 mm versus 4515 mm). The result? Well, varied "profiles," especially around the rear doors, pillars, and trunk lid. And there are differences in the styling of the cars' body kits as well.

But, let's focus on the European Sportage – the one officially making its way to the Ukrainian market. This beast boasts a massive decorative grille, proudly positioned below the signature KIA Tiger Nose design element, fully LED headlights (matrix available for an extra charge), DRLs shaped like boomerangs, and black-painted lower elements of bumpers and moldings. The more "sporty" GT-Line version flaunts a differently styled body kit with fewer black accents.

Now, when it comes to the interior, it shares nothing with its predecessor. The star of the show is the curved block located under a single glass. It features two 12.3-inch displays – the left one for the instrument panel, the right one, a touchscreen, for the multimedia system (top versions get a larger display; base ones, a smaller diagonal). Adding to the cockpit experience is the lower touchscreen block, responsible for climate control and media management.

Moving to the second row, defaulting to a 40:20:40 split, the recline angle of the sofa's backrest is adjustable. In travel mode, the luggage compartment offers a volume of 591 liters (according to VDA standards, i.e., up to the cover). Fold the second-row backrest, and you get a whopping 1780-liter compartment.

Under the hood, the Sportage offers a variety of powertrains. The main ones for the European model include a 1.6-liter T-GDI petrol engine (150 hp or 180 hp), a 1.6-liter CRDI diesel engine (115 hp or 136 hp), and hybrids based on the same 1.6-liter 180-hp engine. The plug-in hybrid PHEV delivers a combined 265 hp, thanks to its 13.8-kilowatt-hour battery. The regular hybrid HEV boasts 230 hp with a petite 1.49-kilowatt-hour battery.

Options for this KIA aren't limited to just all-wheel-drive (with a rear axle clutch) but also include adaptive dampers. As for the active electronic assistants (in the brand's terminology – DriveWise), the European KIA Sportage offers collision prevention systems, including during turns, navigation-based adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping system, active blind-spot monitoring, and other helpful features.
