Well, buckle up, my petrol-head comrades! We've got the KIA Sportage (Киа Спортейдж) – the front- or all-wheel-drive crossover in the coveted "K1" class. This is the fifth dance of the model, and the grand reveal took place on June 8, 2021.
Now, after 28 years of Sportage existence, KIA has decided to pull the old "It's not you, it's me" trick and split the European version from the "global" model. These cars flaunt different wheelbases (2755 mm versus 2680 mm) and lengths (4660 mm versus 4515 mm). And, as a result, we've got a varied symphony of "profiles," especially around the rear doors, pillars, and trunk lid. Even the body kits decided to join the party of differences.
But, let's put the spotlight on the European Sportage – the one officially making its way to the Ukrainian turf. This beast comes with a colossal decorative grille, proudly sitting below the iconic KIA Tiger Nose design element. Fully LED headlights (with a matrix option for the flashy spenders), DRLs shaped like boomerangs, and lower elements of bumpers and moldings painted in the deepest black. The more "sporty" GT-Line version? Oh, it boasts a different body kit style with fewer black inserts.
Now, when it comes to the interior – it's a clean break from the previous generation. The main act here is a curved block under a unified glass. It's the maestro, conducting the show with two 12.3-inch displays: the left one takes charge of the instrument panel, and the right one – touch-sensitive – handles the multimedia system (top versions get the big screen; basic ones, a slightly smaller diagonal). And adding to the whole cockpit experience is the lower touch-sensitive block, responsible for toggling between menus, managing both climate control and media.
Jump into the second row, defaulting to a 40:20:40 split, with the recline angle of the sofa's backrest being your own customizable comfort zone. In travel mode, the luggage compartment flaunts a volume of 591 liters (according to VDA standards, i.e., up to the cover). Fold down the second-row backrest, and voila – you've got yourself a compartment with a whopping 1780-liter capacity.
Under the hood, the Sportage presents a smorgasbord of power options. The main players for the European model include a 1.6-liter T-GDI petrol engine (150 hp or 180 hp), a 1.6-liter CRDI diesel engine (115 hp or 136 hp), and hybrids – all based on that trusty 1.6-liter 180-hp engine. The plug-in hybrid PHEV flexes a combined 265 hp, thanks to its 13.8-kilowatt-hour battery. The regular hybrid HEV? Well, it packs a punch with 230 hp and a petite 1.49-kilowatt-hour battery.
Options for this KIA go beyond just all-wheel drive (complete with a rear axle clutch) and include adaptive dampers. And when it comes to active electronic assistants (in the brand's lingo – DriveWise), the European KIA Sportage offers a collision prevention system, even during turns, a navigation-based adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping system, active blind-spot monitoring, and a cast of other helpful allies.
